This protrusion is called the "genital tubercle" and it is the angle of this tubercle that can offer information as to whether your baby is a little girl or a little boy.
Sometimes, there are males and females at this stage that show an unclear result this would be considered a ‘grey area’, but essentially a boy’s ‘tubercle points 30 degrees up from the spine and a girl's tubercle points straight down or less that 30 degrees from the spine.
